Frenetic festive season shopping saw automobile sales scale a new peak in October as consumers clamoured to buy more and more cars and two wheelers.
All big car and two wheeler manufacturers — Maruti, Hyundai, Ford, Hero Honda, TVS Motors etc — posted their best-ever monthly sales, with Maruti breaching the 1 lakh mark and Hero Honda the 5 lakh mark in domestic sales for the first time.
The companies have set new records thrice this year, and though sales generally peak in the festive season, nobody is betting on how long the latest ones will stand.
“This year has been a magnificent run for Hero Honda,” said Anil Dua, senior vice president, marketing and sales, Hero Honda Motors Ltd. “We’ve sold over four lakh units each month since May... We are hopeful of continuing the momentum.”
Last month’s sales were also boosted by the “Dhanteras” festival factor. Said Arvind Saxena, director, marketing and sales, Hyundai Motor India Ltd: “October has been boosted by the demand for cars around Dhanteras as consumers have booked vehicles but deferred deliveries for that day.”
Dhanteras festival falls on Wednesday, November 3.
The only vehicle that seems to be missing out on all the fun is the Nano. Tata Motors managed to sell just 3,065 units of the car in October, slipping from 9,000 units in July, 8,103 in August and 5,520 in September.
