How can one reduce or completely banish the smell which comes after the AC is turned on or off after a long time?
Abhishek Awasthi
The car AC system has an evaporator that is located underneath the dashboard and is enclosed in a dark box where moisture could be present long after you’ve turned off the AC. Once the AC is turned off, there won’t be any circulated fresh air to dry out the evaporator. This dark and moist environment is a perfect place for smelly bacteria to grow, hence the foul smell coming from the AC.

There are a few products available in India which can help keep foul smells at bay:
3M coil cleaner and disinfectant foam.
Gulf neutraliser-air-conditioner cleaner.
Eagle One Air odour eliminator.
A branded car perfume/ freshener which clips on the AC vent.
It is also important to keep the car interiors clean. Seek professional help if required.

I want to buy a petrol or a diesel compact MUV priced below Rs 9 lakh. It should be a seven-seater and have AC, power steering and good handling and braking. Does Toyota plan to introduce its Avanza in early 2011?
Sreeraj Karavatt
Toyota is considering the launch of the Avanza but it won’t come before 2012. However, it is not a seven-seater as it has only two rows of seats and can at best seat five. The best option is the Innova, but you may have to stretch your budget to go beyond the base model.

Has there been any recent change in the Maruti Swift’s diesel engine? Also, is the engine the same old Fiat Multi-jet motor?
The Swift uses the same Multi-jet engine as the Fiat, but, like all engines, it has been upgraded to meet BS IV emission norms. The level of tuning is slightly different between the two and so is the performance. We feel that the diesel motor in the Swift has a slight edge over other cars that use the same Fiat diesel engine.

I am planning to buy a new saloon priced within Rs 7-8 lakh. Along with performance, fuel efficiency is a key priority. I would prefer a petrol-engined car to a diesel. Please advise a good buy.
The Ford Fiesta best fits your budget. The 1.6 Duratec petrol is an excellent motor, offering superb performance and decent fuel efficiency too.
