Maruti leads surge in July car sales

Car industry leader Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) on Wednesday reported an 18.3 per cent jump in its domestic vehicle sales during July at 52,839 units as against 44,653 units in the same month last year.
The company's exports grew 188.9 per cent during the month to 5,070 units compared to 1,755 units in July last year, MUL said in a statement.
Sales in the A1 segment, which comprises Maruti 800, were marginally down during the month to 5,970 units as against 6,040 units in July 2006. However, in the A2 segment which includes hatchbacks Alto, Wagon-R, Zen and Swift, the company sold 34,737 units compared to 29,326 units in the same month last year, up 18.5 per cent .
With the successful launch of SX4 and special utility vehicle Grand Vitara, the company's sales in the A3 and MUV (multi utility vehicle) segment during the month grew 105.1 per cent and 113 per cent, respectively.
Maruti’s traditional rival Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) also reported a 14.6 per cent growth in overall sales with 28,203 units. While the domestic market accounted for 15,003 units, exports totalled 13,200 units in July.
General Motors India (GMI) reported 87 per cent increase in domestic sales during July at 4,570 units against 2,450 units in the same month last year.
The company sold 1,601 units of multi-utility vehicle Chevrolet Tavera, 1,119 units of sedan Aveo and hatchback Aveo UV-A, 450 units of premium sedan Chevrolet Optra and 1,400 units of its mini-car Spark during the month, GM said in a statement.
GM said Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Optra Magnum diesel have been well received by customers across the country.
Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) reported a 49 per cent jump in its domestic sales in July at 18,536 units compared with 12,841 units in the same month a year ago.
The company's exports during the month, however, declined by four per cent to 627 units as against 655 units in the year ago month, M&M said in a statement. M&M sold 2,890 units of its flagship sedan Mahindra Renault Logan in July. The company said its Logan and SUV Scorpio continue to lead in their respective segments.
ŠkodaIndia said that the company has achieved sales of 845 units in July 2007, including 40 units of the flagship model ŠkodaSuperb.
