Maruti Suzuki India would play a much bigger role in Suzuki Motor Corporation’s global operations and nearly 30 per cent of Suzuki’s sales would come from its India operations.
“Maruti Suzuki’s R&D has shown tremendous potential through its contribution to the Swift and Concept A-Star. Maruti’s manufacturing capability has reached a level where we want to make small cars exclusively in India for export to Europe,” Maruti’s newly appointed managing director S. Nakanishi said.
Outlining his plans for India, he said the company would launch new models to remain a aggressive player in the market. “ Besides, our capital investment of Rs 9,000 crore in manufacturing and engine facilities, we want to invest substantially in marketing infrastructure as well,” he said.
Nakanishi said the next-generation of engines for various models would hit the market in the next 3-5 years. “Our engineers are evolving the next- generation engines that would serve the Indian market, among others. These will be available in 3-5 years,” he said. Maruti has no plan to phase out its multi-activity vehicle Versa that has been receiving a poor market response since its launch, he said. The Maruti managing director said there were plans to resume exports to Europe in a big way. “Exports to Europe have always been a focus,” he said.
