The dust raised over the suspension of UP bureaucrat Durga Shakti Nagpal has led to a sudden crackdown on sand miners. On Thursday, the district administration of Bhind imposed a whopping Rs 263-crore fine on a sand miner.

Though this is one of the highest amounts of fine imposed, it was a punishment for hoarding. But here illegal mining was being carried out as well, clarified M Sibi Chakkravarthy, collector, Bhind.

On July 13, the administration had conducted a raid at the site, around 500 km north of Bhopal. Over 4.20 lakh cubic meter sand was found to be hoarded. The miner was one Ravi Mohan Trivedi, who is from Rajasthan.

The fine was imposed after giving him an opportunity to explain his side. The fine, as per rules, was the actual cost of the sand multiplied by 10, added Chakkravarthy.
