SPOILERS AHEAD

The land of nawabs-meets-the state of goons

Madhuri Dixit plays a

begum

and

mushairas

are the order of the day. Thankfully, Urdu literature is not lost in this Bollywood setting. The

nawabi

decadence is present in good measure. However, Vijay Raaz plays the perfect foil to this way of life. He plays an MLA and a wannabe-

nawab

who happily issues death threats to get his ways.

Arshad's abuses which are a blend of class and crass

Vishal Bhardwaj gives this character a delectable language of his own. Sample these --

mastak ki maa behen kar re ho

or

plan ka ammi aapa kar diya

Madhuri Dixit's portrayal of a royal

begum

She is expected to add grace to her characters. With Begum Para,

turns this into an art form. Madhuri also showcases her dancing prowess in a sequence in the movie as well as Hamari Atariya that plays with the end credit rolls.

A hint of a lesbian relationship between Madhuri-Huma

Post a twist in the story, the filmmaker subtly hints at a lesbian relation between

and Huma Qureshi. In one of the sequences, watching Madhuri and Huma dance and enjoy each other's company playfully, Iftekhar Khaalu (Nasseruddin Shah) wonders if he should ask for '

lihaaf'

. You might be reminded of Ismat Chugtai's short story Lihaaf, not only because of Naseer’s reaction but also because of the imagery in front of you.

Vijay Raaz

Vijay Raaz's tapori style of reciting shayari in a mushaira is something one can't afford to miss. His comic timing adds to the fun.

Vishal Bhardwaj's dialogues

Vishal Bhardwaj's

are

paisa vasool

. Here are a few worth mentioning.

Arshad:

Tu Budhau Khaalu se PT Usha hoti ja ri hai

.

Naseer:

Hum Nawab hain, ladte bhi adab se hain.

.

Arshad:

Jab haath me bandoook ho to sher padha nai jaata, maara jata hai

.

Arshad:

Aaj zindagi me pehli baar tay nai kar paa riya kya le riya hun aur kya de riya hun

!

A hoarding of

bhayankar

thandi beer!

You have seen all versions of this 'child' beer but '

bhayankar thandi'

? Now that’s a taste of small-town Uttar Pradesh you don’t want to miss. Also, you see the hoarding during a chase sequence.

A night-long stand-off without any firing

There's a stand-off between MLA Jaan's (Vijay Raaz) gang and Babban-Khaalu. The men stand for the whole night brandishing guns at each other because both sides want to be the last ones to back off. Interestingly, the stand-off ends when they hear the strains of Humko Mann Ki Shakti Dena.

Bromance between Naseer and Arshad

If you loved the two in Ishqiya, you will find them twice as good in this one.

Remembering the Umrao Jaan era

The film brings such grace to the dialogues, frames, set-up and songs of a movie. It does look a bit unrealistic but then, isn’t cinema all about suspension of disbelief?
