Happy birthday Varun Dhawan: Is he Bollywood's next superstar?

Actor Varun Dhawan shares his birthday with cricket legend Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. The similarities between the two perhaps end here. Varun started his career around the time Sachin was tossing with the idea of hanging up his boots. Student of the Year hit the screens on October 19, 2012, and the little master announced his retirement from one day internationals on December 23, 2013.

We know what you're thinking: this can't be about equals. Sachin had already started winning the world when Varun was in his nappies.

But if they share the same zodiac sign, shouldn’t the two share some similar traits! Unlike Sachin, Varun's may not be an explosive debut. Still, he's shown us glimpses of what he's capable of with his choice of films, and the penchant for experimenting with his roles.

Here are five reasons why we think he could well be Bollywood's next bit thing soon.

Yes, he is just 27 and this is not the right age to judge anybody’s calmness. Still, think about it. Varun got a dream debut under Karan Johar’s tutelage, and the film also turned out to be a money-spinner. This much was enough for him to turn into a typical ‘star’. Always remember, Bollywood is a world that is more or less secluded from the actual middle class issues and here even 40 plus actors lose temper without much provocation. Dhawan hasn’t done so yet, even after three successful years and four hits.

Not many know that Varun’s father David is an authority over Ritwik Ghatak. You see, there is a reason they ask you to not judge a book by its cover. His interviews are proof enough to convey that the Dhawan household would have imbibed a sense of good cinema in Varun as well. It’s true that films such as Main Tera Hero and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania are far from any cerebral stuff, but then how many times have you seen a 27-year-old go for a dark film like Badlapur?

It was hard to believe in the beginning that Sriram Raghavan had actually cast Varun Dhawan in Badlapur, but then the film arrived and surprisingly went on to make money as well. It was a revelation for the ticket-paying audience who thought Dhawan is nothing more than mere eye-candy. He wasn’t the best, but definitely better than most of his contemporaries who seek solace in dancing around the trees.

The insider

The Hindi film industry is definitely divided into two factions: the insiders or the industry children, and the ever struggling outsiders. However, the first group may come up with good looking actors, but they need to fetch support from able directors who are mostly from outside the industry. One Imtiaz Ali is needed for Alia Bhatt (Highway), and Shahid Kapoor would need one Vishal Bhardwaj. Varun seems like the one who can actually strike a balance between the two worlds, especially after Badlapur.

Desired skill sets

If you've seen the trailer of ABCD2, you wouldn't dare to underestimate his dancing prowess. A good physique is a given in Bollywood these days. If he doesn’t take much time in honing his acting skills then he can be a contender of the evergreen loverboy spot vacant after Shah Rukh Khan’s ascendance in stature. It’s different if you think that Shah Rukh is still the Numero Uno in the game of love!
