Sonam Kapoor’s make-or-break chance to stay in Bollywood’s A-lister’s category will be put to test on Friday with the release of the biopic Neerja, which also stars Shabana Azmi.
Based on true events, the film is a thrilling ride, but definitely not a biopic. Hand-held camera and seriousness in acting make Neerja an engaging watch.
Sonam and Shabana’s chemistry in the film is amazing and something not to be missed. Directed by Ram Madhvani, the film, set in the ‘80s, looks authentic and dramatic.
Neerja is about PanAm air hostess Neerja Bhanot who died trying to save 359 passengers aboard a hijacked flight on September 5, 1986. She was also the first civilian and youngest person to be honoured with the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest bravery award.
While the makers were applauded for bringing out the story of the Neerja, Sonam – who plays the braveheart in the biopic – is also receiving rave reviews for her performance. Neerja might even turn out to be a career defining film for her.
The movie also stars Yogendra Tiku who plays Neerja’s father. Shabana plays Sonam’s mother in the film.
Sonam needs a hit very desperately after duds like Khoobsoorat and Dolly Ki Doli. Her film, Raanjhanaa, with Dhanush, was a hit and helped her establish her credentials as an actor in the industry.
