Director Prakash Jha might not say so, but the trailer of Satyagraha seems to have enough references to Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign.
As a result, some sequences in the promo seem to already have created a stir in the Hazare camp, as they look for resemblance between real people and Jha’s characters. Kumar Vishwas, a close aide to Hazare, reveals that apart from Amitabh Bachchan (supposedly based on Hazare), he saw shades of himself in Arjun Rampal’s character, while Ajay Devgn’s character seems similar to politician-activist Arvind Kejriwal.
“The three characters in the film are so similar to the real people that it’s evident that he (Jha) is strongly inspired by Anna’s movement. Arjun Rampal’s costume features kurtas and shawls — the dress code I maintained throughout the movement. Ajay Devgn is seen in half-sleeve shirts, the same as what Arvind (Kejriwal) used to wear during the movement,” says Vishwas. Jha’s claim has been that he drew inspiration from mass protests around the world. However, Kumar argues that the basic groundwork is based on Anna’s team. “When Jha was starting the film, he used to have regular conversations with us on the crux of the Anna Hazare movement and how it was formulated. So we would appreciate it if his Satyagraha stays true to the Anna Hazare movement,” says Vishwas.
So while Hazare’s team is keeping a close eye on Satyagraha, the director maintains that “Anna Hazare’s movement mobilised common people. In my film, the movement and its logic is completely different. I’m not trying to be judgemental about Anna Hazare’s movement, and I don’t want anyone to be judgemental about my film. Any suspicion of linking it with Hazare’s movement is uncalled for. But there is nothing I can do about that.”
