Art therapy combines creativity with passion to provide help to people dealing with mental health issues. It is this belief that led Dr. Shubham Shree to become the Founder of Amrapali Creative Group, a Patna-based organization which encourages artists to follow their art as a passion, not a profession. The Group was launched in January 2020, on the occasion of the Republic Day and its purpose is to promote art forms like dance, fine arts, music and meditation. The overall mission of Amrapali Creative Group is to provide mental well-being along with physical health. Dr. Shubham Shree is a renowned social worker devoted to the cause of mental health awareness, besides being an artist of repute.
Speaking about the purpose behind this Group, Dr. Shubham says, “In the present world, mental health is as important as the physical one, especially because mental & emotional stress have become a part of our daily lives. Everyone of us gets touched by it at one point or another in our life. These difficulties make us either stronger or more vulnerable. In order to overcome the vulnerabilities, we need to indulge in art forms, in one way or another. If we don’t do that, such stresses can have a lasting effect on individuals of various age groups and cause further deterioration in health in the form of phobia, anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, psycho-somatic distress, abuse or depression.”
Recently, the Group performers also shot their first outdoor video at Sabhyata Dwar in Patna.
Explaining the importance of art therapy in daily life, Dr. Shree further states, “Art adds meaning to self and surroundings. It induces a feeling of worthiness, purpose, productivity and makes a person self-conscious and creatively inclined. All our artists come from different fields of art and performing at the Group is a matter of passion for them, not a means to earn money.
In fact, it was art that showed the Group members a way out of the drudgery induced by the recent lockdown because of COVID-19. Since the group members could not meet physically, they practiced at their respective homes and posted their practice videos on social media pages like Instagram. As a result, not only were they able to connect with each other but they also garnered a lot of views on social media and attracted a large number of positive comments from complete strangers who were impressed with the kind of work being done at Amrapali Creative Group. In fact, the Group is active on various social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube, in order to widen its reach to people who may need a helping hand.
Speaking about the importance of this collaboration, Dr. Shubham also adds, “Through the Amrapali group, we as individuals can practice our hobby in collaboration and help each other to de-stress ourselves. We can discuss our stories and real life events in order to help each other to cope with difficult situations & emotions that we may be going through. This support group also extends its services to peers and persons who are in mental distress and needs healing, through music, dance, art and meditation as mental health matters.”
The primary objective of Amrapali Creative Group is to promote mental well-being and spread awareness about mental health issues. It is using meditation, mindfulness and art as a hobby to achieve this objective. As Dr. Shubham says, “We believe that even a small step can bring a huge change in someone’s life.”
