How did an Instagram poet, Ashish Bagrecha, defeat depression to become a best-selling author?
One of the major self-help best-selling book that’s trending #1 on Amazon these days is a book called, ‘Dear Stranger, I Know How You Feel’, written by popular Instagram poet, Ashish Bagrecha who gained about 375k followers on Instagram in one year’s time. The author himself has battled with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, panic attacks and suicidal thoughts before writing his experiences and solutions to deal with it in his debut book.
In 2013, Ashish dealt with a serious physical illness in form of Tuberculosis. He says, “Without exaggeration I could say the illness almost ate me alive. The physical pain and the meds took a great toll on my mental health as well. My immune system was severely compromised, I had lumps in my neck, and I was coughing blood. The medications I was prescribed were very strong and my body did not want to accept it. It took every ounce of strength just to keep going.”
Ashish lost a lot of hair; his skin was dying off; he says his brain felt like someone else’s. He himself talks openly about his struggle, “It took two years before I was able to say I was healthy, but it took another five before I could say I was healed.” In his words, realizing that your body can give up on you is a truly humbling experience; one that you do not accept easily. Both his body and his mind had been exhausted from the fight with TB, and he gave in to an episode of depression in 2017 because of many personal and emotional struggles.
It was then when he started writing “Dear Stranger” letters and poems on Instagram to express how he felt. Within a year though his poems got viral and received millions of likes as people started relating and sharing them.
In 2019, he released his debut book, ‘Dear Stranger I Know How You Feel’ which has sold over 75000 copies till now and has ranked #1 bestseller on Amazon and Nielsen for several weeks. His book, Dear Stranger I Know How You Feel, consists of thirty letters and poems that he dedicates to everyone who feels like they are alone with their pain; to everyone who thinks they are losing in a game of life and who feel lonely, lost and misunderstood.
Ashish is also married to best-selling author Savi Sharma and together their mission is to inspire, heal and help people grow through their stories and poems. He is currently working on his next book and podcasts.
