Taking on Redmi Note 7 directly, Realme 3 seems to be a strong competitor

The youth is clearly the most attractive customer segment both in terms of the volume and disposable income. But marketing products to this category can be very challenging – not only is the competition intense, but this segment is also well informed, expects only the latest in technology, and the lowest prices. Few brands have thus been able to find the right formula to capture a higher share of mind among the youth, and Realme is definitely one of those.
A spin-off from handset giant Oppo, Realme has quickly established an independent reputation on the back of its quality range and has often forced more expensive rivals back to the drawing board. We got our hands on its latest offering up close - the Realme 3 - which will certainly take this game a notch higher.
Slated for launch over the next few days, the Realme 3 follows the Redmi Note 7 into the market in just about a month’s gap. Both phones are in the budget Rs 10,000 category, in fact the Realme 3 starts at Rs 8,999 and comes with several card offers at launch, while the sticker price on the Redmi Note 7 is Rs 1,000 higher. Interestingly, both phones are sold as Flipkart-exclusive. Read further to figure out why we feel the Realme 3 is a winner.
Looks & Performance
The Realme 3 runs the new ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie, which includes an app drawer and options like stock android experience, localization optimization, and a revamped game space. On the outside, we were using a model that came in blue (Radiant Blue for Realme 3) and we love the 3D gradient design at the back. In terms of build quality, the Realme3 punches several levels above its class with a finish that feels distinctly premium.
The phone sports a water drop notch at the front for the selfie camera, while the shiny back has a touch sensor along with a dual lens camera set up. The Realme 3 features a 6.2-inch HD+ (1520X720) display, and comes with Corning’s Gorilla Glass protection. The Screen Display Battery Optimization on the device can also extend the battery life by 5% to 10%.
The Realme 3 is powered by a 2.1GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 SoC, and has dual SIM functionality. Two variants are on offer - 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. For additional storage, it has the advantage of a dedicated microSD card slot. This means that in case you have two running SIMs, you still have the option of expandable memory.
At the back, the Realme3 comes with a 13MP and 2MP sensor with some class-leading features such as PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus), Nightscape mode, Hybrid HDR, Chroma Boost, Portrait Mode, scene recognition, and more. Chroma Boost is a great feature that uses AI for blur-free, vivid pictures – you can see the results here.
Meanwhile, night owls and late night party-goers will love the Nightscape feature which, at the touch of a button, optimizes the ISO and shutter speed for great pictures in low light. The front also features a 13MP lens with AI beautification for those amazing selfies. Realme really knows how to get the youth excited about its products.
With games like PUBG and Fortnight becoming a rage, gaming is clearly a major focus area if you are targeting the youth as customers. What matters here is a combination of chipset, RAM, and most of all the graphics processor. The Realme3 comes packed with ARM’s Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, but what puts the Realme3 ahead of its competition is its extra battery juice at 4,230 mAh, versus 4,000 mAh for rivals like the Redmi Note 7. Add to that, the powerful Helio P70 processor adopts TSMC’s latest 12nm FinFET process, which boasts a 15% drop of power consumption compared with the previous 14nm process and can rival the 10nm chip in this regard.
Now true gamers know the value of that – you wouldn’t want to ditch your team in the middle of a PUBG Battle Royale just because your phone dies out!
With the advantage of launching a month right after its key rival, the Realme3 easily stays ahead in key areas. If you want great looks, performance, flexibility, and the ability to take fabulous pictures, the choice is very clear. The Realme3 has pushed the goal post ahead for rivals by checking all the right boxes. The Realme3 has great camera features, more battery life and fantastic build quality. To top that off, the pricing is fabulous. Now isn’t that a great deal!
