After failing badly on the power capacity addition front, a 100-day agenda plan of the Power Ministry under the new UPA government — drawn under instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office —promises to deliver new power capacity of 5,653 megawatts (MW) to the nation by the end of August, reports Anupama Airy.

Sharing the details, a senior official in the PMO told Hindustan Times that three power projects under the Central government sector, being executed by NTPC and the Damodar Valley Corp (DVC), totalling 1,000 megawatt, along with 1,605 MW of state-sector power projects and another 2,689 MW of private sector power projects will be commissioned in the next 100 days.

“Another 220 MW is expected to come from the nuclear power station at Rajasthan —the APP U5 plant, while around 139 MW is expected to come from the state sector hydro electric power projects,” the official said.

In addition, to facilitate addition of another 7,260 MW of power capacity, bulk tendering for 11 super-critical units will be done by NTPC in the next 100 days.

Private sector participation in the transmission sector will be given a major push in the process.

Besides, the 100-day agenda plan also stresses on the need to develop inter-regional transmission systems for increasing the capacity of the national grid.

A roadmap to increase the inter-regional transmission capacity of the country’s national power grid is expected to be increased to 38,650 MW from the current level of 20,800 MW. In the fiscal year 2009-10, inter-regional transmission capacity will be increased by 2,600 MW, while the total inter-regional transmission capacity of the national power grid is expected to be increased to 38,650 MW.
