Soon, you will no longer have to visit the post office to send off your Speed Post packets. Your neighbourhood postman will collect them from your home. You will not be charged extra either.
Some private courier companies already offer the service. In an effort to compete better with them, the Department of Posts has decided to set up call centres in eight cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad — with toll-free numbers that customers can ring and get their packets picked up from home.
John Samuel, general manager, business development and marketing directorate in the department, said, "We expect the service to start soon. It will certainly become operational before year-end. We will also inform customers about the delivery or receipt of Speed Post packets by SMS and email."
The department on Monday also lowered local Speed Post rates by 40 per cent. The minimum charge — for packets sent to local addresses, weighing less than 50 gms — has been brought down from Rs 20 to Rs 12. The area designated ‘local’ has been expanded beyond Delhi to cover NCR.
