The telecom group examining the merger proposal of BSNL and MTNL is "evaluating options" and is likely to submit its report in the next three to four weeks.
"The exercise of evaluation of options in on. The group is likely to present its report to Government in the next three to four weeks," MTNL's CMD Narinder Sharma told reporters here when asked about the status of the merger proposal which was floated in 2002 by the then Communications Minister Pramod Mahajan.
He said the group would submit its report to Arun Shourie, Minister for Communications and IT, but did not comment on the view that was emerging on the issue within the Group.
It may be recalled that Mahajan had floated the proposal for merger of the two telecom corporations, and subsequently a Group had been constituted to look into the issue.
When Shourie took over as Communications Minister in January this year, he indicated that he would study afresh the merger proposal mooted by his predecessor.
Shourie had said that in general, India was not able to manage mammoth organisations.
