Five members of the family, including Priya’s parents and an elderly grandmother, are living in two-room small house at Kunjpura, about 10-kms form Karnal city.

School principal Sunita Bajaj said that the school management gave fee concession due to Priya’s academic record and her humble financial background.

“Even as the family has meager family income, Priya, like her elder sister Kanika, was always a hardworking student. It is heartening to see that despite all hardships, Priya excelled in exams,” said the principal while adding that Kanika was also given fee concession on the simila grounds.

Priya’s father Satish Kumar Mehta is the only breadwinner who source milk from small dairy farmers at Kunjpura to sell to Karnal residents.

At her house in Kunjpura on Monday, Priya said that she wanted to have a career in medical profession but financial constraints were a major hurdle.

“Due to my family’s financial position, I could not take tuition in physics and my aggregate marks were affected. I want to sit for PMT exams but don’t know if the financial position of my family would allow it,” she said.

Priya’s elder sister Kanika is studying commerce at Janki Devi Memorial College of Delhi University.

She thanks her parents for encouraging both sisters in pursuing their academic career.

She said that support by the school principal and the one who teaches her biology helped her in the performance.

“My father Satish Kumar is a matriculate while mother Veena has studied up to 12th standard. Contrary to a trend in Haryana villages, my parents always encouraged us to study and it led my sister to prepare for charted accountancy in Delhi,” she said.

Father Satish said that he was delighted by Priya’s performance.

“My daughters have scored well without tuition or additional coaching. Despite our limitations, we have brought up Priya as an independent girl who could take her own decision with confidence and others may take lesson of commitment from her,” said Veena.
