The mortal remains of Giani Tarlochan Singh, jathedar, Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, who died of heart attack on Wednesday, were consigned to flames here on Thursday.

His son Hardev Singh lit the pyre. Thousands of people from all walks of life attended the funeral. Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh performed the ardas.

Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal visited Anandpur Sahib in the morning to pay respects to Giani Tarlochan Singh and laid a wreath on the body.

Hundreds of people, including health minister Madan Mohan Mittal, minister for tourism and jails Sarwan Singh Phillaur, and various religious, social and political leaders, bid adieu to the departed soul.

Shops and commercial establishments, and educational institutes run by the SGPC remained closed as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, Akal Takht head granthi Giani Mal Singh, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, former president Kirpal Singh Badungar, general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, and Damdami Taksal head Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa were also present on the occasion.
