“It is not easy to showcase nearly 40 years of experience in an hour presentation. So, I have briefed about my earlier work, and then taken a 10 year leap and depicted my other works,” says Kanchan, who is a painter, sculptor, ex-lecturer and printmaking artist.

Her works have been published in various art books, including Feminine Fables by Geeti Sen, Aradhnarashwar and Shringhar by Alka Pande.

From a docile person to a talkative one, as she calls herself now, art has not only enabled her to find herself, but helped her improve with time. “Art is a reflection of society and one’s life. As an artist one has to struggle a lot, hence, the idea is to never give up,” says the 58-year-old painter. Kanchan has been a regular exhibitor of her art pieces in various exhibitions in the country and abroad.

From her canvas paintings, paper paintings to mix-media art form, the body of work and use of brighter hues are common. We ask the reason and she revealed, “As my life has been a rollercoaster ride, now I use brighter colours such as brown and blue to give a vibrant effect.”

Kanchan added that there have been numerous artists who have inspired her, including David Hockney,
Frida Kahlo and Amrita Shergill.

In all these years, Kanchan believed that as multimedia art form is the latest trend, its little unfortunate that it has taken over the form of pure painting. Multimedia form of art, such as installation art, involves use of more than one medium for depicting visual artwork.

As Kanchan is an ex-lecturer from College of Art, New Delhi, we quizzed her about the interest of art amongst youngsters and budding artists, and she explained, “Our generation was quieter. Children, now, are street smart. They know what they want… they are more focused. They are aware about the trends. Besides, the coming up of auction houses has motivated them.”

Kanchan now plans to focus on travelling and work to enhance herself further.
