A gruesome double murder came to light late on Wednesday evening in Kiratpur village near Pinjore when the highly decomposed bodies of 29-year-old Kiran and her eight-year-old- daughter Komal were found in a bed-box in their one-room rented accommodation. Kiran's husband Sooraj, a Nepalese citizen, who is absconding, is suspected to have killed them on Sunday.

The bodies were recovered after the neighbours complained to the owner of the house about stench. The owner called the police, who broke the locks and recovered the bodies.

It is learnt that Sooraj worked as a mason and used to remain away from house for days together. This, sources said, made him suspect adultery by his wife while he was away. For Kiran, a Nepal native earlier settled in Madawala near Panchkula, it was her second marriage; Komal was her daughter from the first marriage.

The family of three had been living in the rented room for the past about two months and the couple used to fight often, said the police. "We have gathered information that the couple did not have a congenial relationship; the husband was an alcoholic and used to beat his wife often," said an official. The police also found liquor bottles in the room.

Sooraj had come back from work on Sunday, and since Monday the house was locked from outside. Kiran's brother-in-law Amar Thapa was informed by the police; he said he had called up Sooraj on Tuesday when Sooraj told him he was travelling with his wife and daughter. But when Thapa asked him to put Kiran on the phone, Sooraj said that while he was sitting on the roof of the bus, both Kiran and Komal were inside.

The police called a forensic team who took samples from the spot; the case was registered against Sooraj under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

As for the actual cause of death, that would be known after post-mortem examination to be conducted at the Panchkula government hospital in Sector 6, where the bodies have been kept.
