‘No quiet tie-ups with BJP’: CPI (M) orders cadre for Bengal panchayat poll

?The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will not allow its workers and leaders to have any electoral understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party during the West Bengal panchayat elections set to be held in early 2023, a senior CPI (M) leader said on Friday. The decision was taken at a two-day CPI(M) state committee meeting that ended on Thursday in Kolkata, CPI (M) state secretary Md Salim told HT on Friday.

Haryana CM Khattar to distribute Chirayu cards to 10 lakh more beneficiaries

Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has launched the Chirayu Haryana scheme with the aim to extend the BJP-led Centre's flagship Ayushman Bharat to 28 lakh beneficiaries with an annual income limit of 1.8 lakh in the state. He will virtually distribute new Chirayu cards to 10 lakh beneficiaries on Saturday. These cards will be distributed through camps in 1,600 villages and towns of the state.

Farmers stage protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demand legal guarantee for MSP

Scores of farmers affiliated with the All India Kisan Congress gathered at the Jantar Mantar here on Friday, demanding legal guarantee for MSP and compensation for the kin of farmers killed in last year's agitation against the Centre's three farm laws. Thousands of farmers, particularly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, protested at the borders of the national capital for over a year, demanding the repeal of the three farm laws.

Days after the MCD polls, the Congress' Delhi unit vice-president Ali Mehdi and its two newly elected councillors joined the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday. Two of the Councillors are Sabila Begum and Nazia Khatoon. At a press conference, AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said they decided to join his party after seeing the work done by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Congress managed to win nine seats in the recent MCD polls.

After three years of La Nina conditions continuously influencing the global weather conditions, the grip of La Nina is expected to weaken from spring of 2023, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of US has said. This could mean a relatively warm spring and summer over India, experts said. The current La Nina has been relatively weak but unusually prolonged.

A history-sheeter from Andhra Pradesh was shot four times in Bengaluru's K R Puram by a gang of four on Thursday, while a 29-year-old Shivashankar Reddy, who relocated to Bengaluru an year ago to enter the real estate business' driver also got a bullet in the leg. They shot as many as 10 bullets, out of which four hit Reddy and one got his driver. Reddy was injured in the hip, shoulder, back and the leg, while his driver, Ashok Reddy, got injured in the leg as well.

Karnataka Govt to use ITMS technology to manage Bengaluru traffic

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday announced the sanction of five more new traffic police stations in the next few days. The Karnataka CM further said that a new traffic system has also come into being as they have now created the post of special commissioner for traffic, for which the government has appointed traffic management expert MA Salim.

Former Delhi Commission for Women chief Barkha Shukla on Friday pointed at the Aam Aadmi Party's involvement in the appointment of members in the body while also alleging that there was no conduct of educational checks during their recruitment. The remarks of Barkha Shukla came after a special court ordered the framing of corruption and criminal conspiracy charges against DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal.

3-yr-old boy found dead in public toilet; autopsy report awaited: Delhi Police

The body of a three-year-old boy was found inside a public toilet at Jhilmil Industrial Area near Vivek Vihar in east Delhi on Thursday, police said. Police said there were no visible injury marks found in the boy's body. The exact cause of death is still being ascertained as the police are awaiting the child's autopsy report. Police officials said they are also looking at the possibility of sexual assault.

Delhi court extends Aaftab Poonawala’s judicial custody by 14 days

A Delhi court on Friday extended by 14 days the judicial custody of 24-year-old Aaftab Poonawala who is accused of killing Poonawala's girlfriend Shraddha Walkar and dismembering her body, a senior police officer said. On November 28, a group of men from a fringe right-wing Hindu outfit, some wielding swords, tried to attack Poonawala outside the Forensic Science Laboratory offices in Rohini where he was taken for a polygraph test.

Goa Police arrests convict, absconding for 15 years, from West Bengal’s Digha

The Goa Police crime branch have arrested a convict, who was on the run for the last 15 years after a prison break incident, from Digha in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district. Then a resident of Panaji, Jackson Dadel, was convicted in 2007 for the murder of Godwin D'Silva in 2005, who he along with one Rudolph Gomes stabbed to death. He broke out of prison in 2007 and has been absconding since.

In a freak incident, a man standing on a platform of West Bengal's Kharagpur railway station was electrocuted after a high-tension live wire fell on him. A video of the incident, captured on the CCTV, was doing rounds on social media platforms. The incident happened on Wednesday. A few moments later, people were seen gathering around him. The incident threw light on the safety hazards at railway stations in India.

Shraddha murder case: Delhi court extends Aaftab Poonawala's custody for 14 days

A Saket Court extended the judicial custody of Aaftab Amin Poonawala for 14 days said officials on Friday. Aaftab is the chief accused in the Shraddha Walkar murder case. Aaftab Amin Poonawalla, the accused of killing his live-in partner Shraddha Walker, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, was produced before the Saket court here through video conferencing, said the Prison Officials.
