A man under preventive custody escaped on Thursday while being taken for medical examination after pushing aside a home guard volunteer, police said.
The accused, identified as Mandeep Singh, a resident of Manjit Nagar on Tibba Road and originally from Muktsar Sahib, had been detained for allegedly roaming in a drunken state and creating nuisance.
ASI Kashmir Singh said police were taking Mandeep to the civil hospital when he requested a stop, claiming he needed to relieve himself. Despite being handcuffed, Mandeep pushed home guard volunteer Nirmal Singh and fled the spot. Police attempted a chase but were unable to apprehend him.
A case under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, for resisting lawful apprehension, has been registered against him. Police teams are conducting raids across the city to locate the accused and arrest him.
