For the convenience of residents, the UT administration on Tuesday decided to keep all 45 Sampark centres open on Sunday as well. The decision was taken in a meeting of the executive committee of the Society for Promotion of IT in Chandigarh, which has been set up under the aegis of the department of information technology, Chandigarh. Rupesh Kumar, director, IT said the Sampark centres will remain open from 9 am to 5 pm on Sundays.
Pinning its hopes on more grant-in-aid from the Centre, the Chandigarh municipal corporation on Tuesday approved a ?2,176.4 crore budget for financial year 2023-24 with a ?487-crore deficit. While the corporation had demanded ?1,332.5 crore as grant-in-aid for the upcoming fiscal, expecting implementation of Fourth Delhi Finance Commission's recommendations, it was allocated only ?555 crore in the Union Budget on?February 1.
The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday suspended the life sentence of Harmehtab Singh Rarewala, convicted in the Akansh Sen murder case by a district court in November 2019. Sen, a nephew of former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh's wife Pratibha, was run over by a BMW car several times following a brawl in Sector 9 on February 9, 2017. As per prosecution, Sen was killed over old enmity.
After a trail of flop auctions, the Chandigarh Housing Board has slashed the reserve prices of leasehold commercial properties by 10% ahead of the next auction. Putting 137 properties on offer, the board has invited e-bids from February 8 to March 7 through its website. Among the total properties, 45 are freehold residential units and 92 are leasehold commercial units. Out of 91 commercial properties on leasehold basis, only two were sold.
In yet another hit and run accident in the city, a speeding car left a 68-year-old pedestrian dead near Sai Baba Temple in Sector 29 on late Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Ravinder Singh, a resident of Sector 68, Mohali. The accident was witnessed by a security guard, who works at a night shelter near the temple. Suddenly, a speeding car coming from the community centre hit the pedestrian.
A 27-year-old painter allegedly bludgeoned The accused, Ajay's friend to death with a rod after an argument during a drinking session in Sector 117 on Tuesday. The accused, Ajay, was arrested soon after the crime. He and the victim, Rajbir, 26, also a painter, lived in Balongi. Police said the two friends were having drinks at a tavern in Sector 117 on Tuesday evening. There, they had an argument, which turned into a violent brawl.
Upset over failing in Class-10 exams twice, a 14-year-old girl ended her life by hanging herself at her house in Kharak Mangoli, Panchkula. A student of a government school in Panchkula, the teenager was the eldest among five siblings. The couple found their daughter hanging in her room on Tuesday and alerted the police, following which Sector 7 SHO Mahavir Singh and ACP Surinder Singh reached the spot.

A 55-year-old woman identified as Iqbal Kaur was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Ambala's Barara town, police said on Tuesday. The Kaur, a widow, used to live in Singhpura colony with one of her sons and a grandson. The other son Tajender Singh, who lives with his maternal uncle in Yamunanagar, said that on Saturday, his brother Kulwinder informed him about the demise of their mother.
The state unit of Congress has constituted its screening committee for the upcoming Karnataka assembly election, people privy to the matter said on Tuesday. State Congress chief DK Shivakumar, former chief minister Siddaramaiah, AICC in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, and senior leaders BK Hariprasad, MB Patil, G Parameshwara and AICC secretaries in-charge of the state will be ex officio members of the panel. Elections in Karnataka are likely to be held in April-May.

The water taxi service 'Nayan XI' from Belapur to Gateway of India (GOI) was inaugurated by minister Dadaji Bhuse in the presence of Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre. The services have been launched by MyBoatRide.com in partnership with Nayantara Shipping. Bhuse said fares had been kept low at ?250 and ?350. A water taxi service launched in February from Belapur to Bhau Cha Dhakka was soon closed down.
