A Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur has offered a section of The man, Babu Ali's property to the district government, so that a temple that falls on the Delhi-Lucknow national highway widening project can be relocated there. The man, Babu Ali, donated one 'bigha' (0.65 hectares) of land near NH-24 to the administration, so that the temple could be shifted, additional district magistrate (administration) Ramsevak Dwivedi was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Visva-Bharati serves show cause notice to 7 faculty members over ‘defamatory’ note

Visva Bharati University has issued show-cause notices to seven faculty members for signing a leaflet containing "misleading and false information with defamatory views on the vice chancellor". President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to visit the university, which has recently seen a number of agitations and a threatened eviction of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. Faculty members have requested the President to take remedial actions to save the university.

The Dehradun police have booked a former Cricket Association of Uttarakhand office bearer and coach of international cricketer Sneh Rana under the POCSO Act after an audio clip of him having an obscene conversation with a minor girl cricketer went viral. He has been removed from his post and an investigation is underway. No complaint has yet been received by the Cricket Association of Uttarakhand.

The Punjab government told the HC that radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh has not been arrested yet, despite efforts to nab him. The petitioner's counsel submitted footage of Amritpal's presence at a police station on March 18. The court has sought a fresh affidavit from the IG by Wednesday, while the state's role has been criticized for Amritpal escaping despite 80,000 cops at its disposal. The National Security Act has been invoked against the Waris Punjab De chief and his role is being probed in five criminal cases.

Atiq Ahmad, 2 others get 'rigorous' life term in 2006 Umesh Pal kidnap case

Atiq Ahmed, a gangster-turned-politician, has been convicted by a court in Prayagraj for the 2006 kidnapping of lawyer Umesh Pal, the main witness in the killing of BSP lawmaker Raju Pal. Umesh Pal was shot dead in Prayagraj in February and Atiq Ahmad was brought to Prayagraj from Gujarat by a 45-member police team, and is now held in a high-security jail.

17-year-old N Tomchou Meetei from Manipur won three medals, including two silvers, at the ongoing 2023 IWF Youth Men and Women World Weightlifting Championships in Durres, Albania. Tomchou Meetei won a bronze medal in snatch, a silver medal in clean & jerk, and a silver medal in overall with a total of 234 kg. He is the first sportsperson from National Sports Academy in Imphal to win a medal in an international competition.

Jalandhar-based couple shot dead in Philippine capital Manila

A Punjabi couple living in the Philippines were found shot dead on Saturday night. The deceased, Sukhwinder Singh, 41, and his wife Kirandeep Kaur, 33, were killed by an unidentified assailant. CCTV footage showed the assailant entering their house and firing multiple shots at Sukhwinder before shooting Kirandeep at point blank. The family of the deceased couple is now seeking help from Indian authorities to take up this matter with its counterpart in the Philippines.

Delhi High Court sets aside trial court's discharge of Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha and six others in Jamia violence case of 2019. Court highlighted that the police and investigating agencies need to know the difference between dissent and insurrection. Additional solicitor general argued that the accused were identified in video clips and named by witnesses and injured policemen. Senior advocate Rebecca John argued that her client could not be identified in video footage.

Madras High Court on Tuesday rejected interim applications of expelled AIADMK leader O Paneerselvam (OPS) and others against the party's general secretary election, paving way for former TN CM Edapaddi Palaniswami (EPS) elevation as the undisputed general secretary. The Supreme Court had upheld the high court's order allowing EPS to remain the AIADMK general secretary. Celebrations erupted after the verdict with EPS supporters distributing sweets and bursting crackers.

HC dismisses former Punjab women commission chair’s plea against removal

The Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed a plea from former State Women Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati, who had been removed from her post on March 7. Gulati had sought to challenge the government order, alleging it was "erroneous", passed without notice and with a "pre-determined mind". The government defended its decision, denying any political considerations.

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai announced that Vaddar (Bhovi), Lambani (Banjara), Koracha and Korama castes will remain in the Scheduled Caste (SC) list, and the state government has decided not to implement Sadashiva commission in future. He alleged that there is a conspiracy by Congress and provocation by local Congress leaders. Members of the Banjara and Bhovi communities targeted the house and office of BJP leader BS Yediyurappa in protest.

Mamata Banerjee takes charge of minority affairs department

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken charge of the state's minority affairs department and appointed Tajmul Hossain as Minister of State for Minority Affairs ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections. This move follows the ruling TMC's defeat in the Sagardighi assembly by-poll, a constituency with over 60% Muslim population. The state Cabinet also gave its nod to the formation of a Minority Development Board. The TMC's defeat is seen as a sign of the erosion of its Muslim base.

19 arrested in Odisha fake mark sheet scam; inter-state racket suspected

Police have arrested 19 people and seized 5,000 fake certificates in a Bolangir district fake marksheet racket, including mastermind Manoj Mishra who had been selling such documents for up to Rs 5 lakh. The scam was not only running in Bolangir district, but also in other districts and outside of Odisha. The scam was busted after postal authorities found 38 candidates with fake matric certificates.

Polling for P.A.C today as opposition leader declares candidature

On Tuesday, polling will be held to elect members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Eight candidates, including AAP's Raghav Chadha and Congress' Shaktisinh Gohil, are contesting for seven seats. BJP's K. Laxman, Ghanshyam Tiwari and Sudhanshu Trivedi, TMC's Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, DMK's Tiruchi Siva and ADMK's M. Thambidurai will compete for the seats. The three BJP candidates are expected to win, while the Congress and DMK candidates are likely to sail through. A close contest is expected between Chadha and Thambidurai.
