Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 6 wickets

Commentary

6:25 PM IST Right then, a comfortable win for Sri Lanka puts them in a very strong position as they still have a couple of games to play. They have a quick turnaround as they play against Hong Kong, China, in Dubai on 15th September, Monday. But for Bangladesh, the way forward has got a bit more challenging, with just one match remaining. They find themselves in the do-or-die territory now. They play against Afghanistan on Tuesday, 16th September. So far, this Asia Cup hasn't produced any nervy games, with all being one-sided. But that, surely and hopefully, won't be the case on Sunday, 14th September, as we wait for the clash of the ages. Next up, it is time for India vs Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The first ball of this marquee Group A match is scheduled to be bowled at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT). But do make sure to mark your presence an hour earlier for the exciting build-up and analysis. Till then, we sign off from here. Take care, cheers!
6:20 PM IST The victorious skipper of Sri Lanka, CHARITH ASALANKA, says that the first two overs were the key moment with two wickets and two maidens there, setting up the platform perfectly and giving them a dream start. Speaking about Wanindu Hasaranga, he mentions that his googly remains his biggest weapon, one that even teammates struggle to pick at times. Calls Hasaranga a real superstar. On batting and improving the net run rate, Asalanka adds that once they got to around 115-120, the focus was on finishing the game quickly. Also, thanks to the fans, he says that the atmosphere was absolutely brilliant with tremendous support from both Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi supporters.
6:17 PM IST The captain of Bangladesh, LITTON DAS, reflects on the defeat. He admits they lost the game inside the Powerplay itself with the bat. Adds that had they scored anything around 170-180, it would have been a different game. Humbly admits that 140 was never going to be enough and also admits that they didn't bowl and field well. On their next game against Afghanistan, he says it is a do-or-die game for them. In the end, he thanks the supporters for coming in large numbers wherever they travel, and expects a similar kind of support in their last league game as well.
6:15 PM IST Sri Lanka's KAMIL MISHARA is adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his impressive match-winning performance. He scored an unbeaten 46 off 32 deliveries. Speaking about the instructions, he shares that Pathum had asked him to just play his natural game and take the innings deep. Reflecting on his performance, Mishara says it is a very happy feeling to win a game for his team. On his time away from the side, he adds that he always believed in himself and kept working hard for the opportunity.
6:09 PM IST ... THE PRESENTATION ...
6:09 PM IST Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka invited Bangladesh to bat first. It was a slow burn, but all action-packed. Two back-to-back wicket maidens, one from Chameera and one from Thushara, set the tone for Sri Lanka. A self-inflicted run out, followed by a couple of dropped catches, and the bail not falling despite smashing the stump. It was all happening out there. Amidst it all, Hasaranga tied the batters in the middle overs with a miserly spell. However, a fighting unbeaten partnership between Jaker Ali and Shamim Hossain, of 86 runs, made the scorecard look quite more respectable and fighting than what could have been an ordinary one. Chameera was the pick from the seamers, while Hasaranga, on his return, did quite well with a couple of wickets.
6:34 PM IST How good has the top order been for the Lankans? Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis have been the pillars lately in white-ball cricket, doing the most heavy-lifting and easing the strain from the middle order. Add to it Kamil Mishara's emergence. Just 6 matches into his T20I career, he has appeared as a confident player at an important batting position, at number 3 on his comeback. Not to be very harsh, but an elevated challenge against the mighty Lankans proved too hot to handle for Bangladesh this time around. They do have a game left in this group stage, and it isn't going to be an easy one against Afghanistan by any means. Meaning, a win for them is a must in that clash. But before that, they have a lot to ponder and rethink about their strategies.
6:06 PM IST With the platform set and the required rate hovering just above a run a ball, it was about smart consolidation from there. That is the value of a strong start against a modest total. It forces errors from the bowlers, putting them on the back foot with too much to do. More than half of the runs were already chewed up even before halfway. And to be very fair, the bowling and fielding from Bangladesh were pretty ordinary. In fact, a shade of what they were against Hong Kong, China, in their opening game. There were a few consolation wickets towards the end, but Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara's 95-run stand just took the wind out of the sails of Bangladesh.
6:03 PM IST Chasing 140 is rarely daunting in modern T20I cricket, but a solid start remains essential and a non-negotiable for any side. Though Kusal Mendis fell early, Pathum Nissanka anchored one end with composure. Kamil Mishara looked scratchy at first, but after being dropped early doors, he shifted gears and punished the bowlers. The Bangladeshi pacers could not match the effectiveness and conviction with which the Sri Lankan seamers operated. By the end of the Powerplay, Sri Lanka had taken control at 55/1.
6:04 PM IST Clinical. Dominating. Effortless. Perfect way to describe Sri Lanka's win against their arch-rivals. They are off to a flier in this tournament with a statement triumph, outnumbering the Bangladeshis across all departments. With 32 balls to spare and 6 wickets in hand, this will massively help Sri Lanka in terms of net run rate. On the other hand, a tough outing for Bangladesh as their net run rate takes a huge dent, and pushes them down to the third spot in Group B. Five matches into the Asia Cup, 2025, and all five have been one-sided in nature.

Shamim Hossain to Kamil Mishara, 2 runs

DONE AND DUSTED! Sri Lanka have defeated Bangladesh by six wickets with 32 balls to spare, giving their net run rate a significant boost. Short and outside off, Kamil Mishara punches it towards cover, where Rishad Hossain makes a fumble and lets the ball go through his hands towards sweeper cover. Both batters run the first one hard and push each other for the second after sensing an opportunity where the deep cover fielder gets a bit late, and even he has fumbled to his left, which allowed the batters to complete second run in time. It was a pretty one-sided affair.

JUST IN! A bit casual in the last couple of overs by Sri Lanka! Good-length delivery, around off. Charith Asalanka leans back and taps it to the extra cover region and calls his partner through for a single. Mahedi Hasan is quick to pick the ball and releases a direct hit to the bowler's end, with Asalanka forced to drag the bat to get in. The replay shows that Charith has cleanly dragged the bat inside the crease, before the stumps were hit. NOT OUT!

Tanzim Hasan Sakib to Dasun Shanaka, no run

ballImg130.9kph

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! A fabulous take from Mustafizur Rahman, and he remains nonchalant after taking that. Down the leg side, on a shortish length by Sakib. Dasun Shanaka swivels and pulls it aerially, behind the square on the leg side, but just does not get the distance and the height. The ball dips low to the right of deep fine leg. Mustafizur Rahman runs and dives to his right to snaffle a clean catch. A forgetful outing for Dasun Shanaka comes to an end. Struggled with the ball and could not see his side through to the win. Departs on 1 (3) and Sri Lanka are 126/4, needing 14 more runs to win.

Mahedi Hasan to Kusal Perera, no run

OUT! LBW! Mahedi Hasan gets his second wicket! This is full and fired in, sliding into the batter with the arm, on the middle stump line. Kusal Perera tries to be extra adventurous and again goes for the reverse sweep. He misses to connect and is beaten by the pace, getting rapped on the pads. A pleading appeal for LBW, but not given. Litton Das sends this upstairs for a review. UltraEdge detects nothing, and the Ball Tracking shows three reds. That looked pretty straight in real time as well. One shot too many for Kusal Perera as he departs for a run-a-ball 9. Sri Lanka are 123/3 and need 17 to win from 7.3 overs.

12.2

Mahedi Hasan to Kusal Perera, 4 runs

FOUR! Gets it through! A juicy half volley, tossed around off. Kusal Perera again gets low, and this time around, he nails the reverse sweep perfectly, through the gap at deep backward point for a boundary.

Mahedi Hasan to Kusal Perera, 2 runs

Pushed through, full and around off. Kusal Perera employs the reverse sweep, but gets it off the gloves. The ball races behind to the deep third fence, but is chased by Shoriful Islam with a slide. Two taken.

5:44 PM IST With 10 runs in the last two overs, the equation for Sri Lanka is now 23 runs from the 8 overs. With a set batter in Kamil Mishara on the crease, they will bank on themselves to get home as early as they can to boost their net run rate.

Mahedi Hasan to Pathum Nissanka, no run

ballImg85.0kph

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! CAUGHT! Mahedi Hasan breaks this 95-run partnership for the second wicket. Spotting Pathum advancing down the track, Mahedi smartly drags the length back and keeps it in front of the stumps, giving very little space for the right-hander to work with. Pathum Nissanka tries to whip it over deep square leg, but mistimes it flat and towards the fielder. Shoriful Islam is a few yards in from the ropes and judges it well to take a sharp catch over his head. A bit too little and too late for Bangladesh at this point. Pathum Nissanka departs for a magnificent 50 off just 34 balls. Sri Lanka are 108/2, needing 32 runs to win.

Drifting in, full and on off, from around the stumps. Kamil Mishara leans forward and clips it to deep square leg for a single.

5:33 PM IST DRINKS BREAK. It has been a one-way traffic so far in the chase. Sri Lanka's top order has just not provided any opening for the Bangladeshi bowlers to make a comeback. And in all fairness, the bowlers have been very ordinary with their lines and lengths, allowing both Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara to play freely and dictate terms and conditions. With just 33 runs needed off the last 10 overs, it should be an easy coasting for the Lankans from here. They can sense the win already, and these two will look to finish their job by staying till the end.

FIFTY FOR PATHUM NISSANKA! 16th T20I half-century for him, and he also completes 2000 runs in his T20I career. Becomes the third Sri Lankan batter to achieve this feat. Back of a length and outside off, Pathum Nissanka presses back and cuts it to the right of deep third for a couple of runs to bring his milestone. SIX! How often have we seen this! A dropped catch is responded to with a biggie! He has picked the bones out of it. Short and on middle, a seam-up delivery, sitting up nicely for the batter. Kamil Mishara reads the length early and pulls it over deep square leg for a huge six.

DROPPED! Goodness me! That should have been taken! Short in length, nipping back into the batter, on off. Kamil Mishara is rushed into the pull shot and mistimes it up in the air, towards the left of mid on. Mahedi Hasan from mid on runs to his left and dives to catch it, even gets the ball into the hands, but it just pops in and out of the palms. Probably Mahedi went with hard hands to grab that. Two taken. An early life for Kamil Mishara.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib to Pathum Nissanka, 1 run

An appeal for LBW from Sakib, but clearly missing the stumps. Extra bounce, on middle, on a length. Pathum Nissanka tries to whip that over square leg, but does not account for the ball popping off the deck. Misses and the ball thuds on the thigh pad.

FOUR LEG BYES! That could be really frustrating for Litton and his men! Short at 146 kph, on the bodyline, nipping into the batter. Pathum Nissanka misses to pull that away, and the ball deflects off the back thigh pad, and rolls between the keeper and the fielder at short third to race to the fence behind.

Full and shaping away, around off. Kamil Mishara prods forward and drives it to find the gap on the off side. But Rishad Hossain, at cover-point, stops it one-handed to his right. Kamil sniffs a single, but Rishad is quick to realise that and releases a flat throw toward the batter's end, but fails to score a direct hit. That will surely uplift the spirits in that Bangladeshi camp.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! A huge breakthrough early doors for Bangladesh and Mustafizur Rahman! He hurls it full in length, slanting across the batter. The ball lands and just nips away a shy bit, teasing the batter to have a poke at it. Kusal Mendis gets half forward and tries to drive it through the off side, but the ball nibbles away and takes the thick, healthy outside edge. Goes flat and low towards the right of the keeper. Litton Das flings himself towards the ball and gathers a fine catch behind the wickets before tumbling down onto the ground. Kusal Mendis departs for 3 (6) and Sri Lanka are 13/1, needing another 127 runs to win off 109 balls.
