In Gambhir’s words: Songs, pranks and diapers keep KKR spirits up
In the last two days, we have had the pleasure of welcoming more members to the KKR family. Morne Morkel’s wife and son joined him on Monday. I am not sure about this, but one member of the support staff told me that the big man was out to buy nappies for his young boycricket Updated: May 12, 2016 11:14 IST
Our Australian recruit Chris Lynn is a wonderful man. He has been in and out of our playing eleven but there is not a sulking bone in him. He continues to do all that is expected of him, and a lot more.
Most Australian cricketers are big on traditions like team cap or team song. Lynn isn’t too far away on this. Our man has penned another KKR team song and is the lead singer as well. Or, as they say in Australia, Lynn is the song master for Kolkata Knight Riders.
This one from Lynn is very different from the original Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo. The lyrics go like this:
So put your hand on your heart and sing
Playing for KKR means everything
From Eden Gardens to every breakthrough
Its more than just me and you
We turn up to play for SRK
It’s purple in our blood
I have quoted the lyrics verbatim, including the number of ‘Ws’ in Yewwwwwww. You can check KKR’s official Facebook page to see how Lynn becomes a lead singer and we all follow him in our high-pitched roar. Personally, I like such stuff.
While I am quite boring and intense, characters like Lynn and Brad Hogg infuse life in the dressing room. While I’ll be searching for my next cover drive, players like Hogg will be thinking about the next prank.
After our loss to Gujarat Lions, we were distraught. Once again, it was not about the loss but the way we were outplayed. That loss came on Sunday and our next game is on Saturday, leaving us with five days to fill.
Trust me, a long break after the loss never helps as I keep itching for action. After a lazy Monday and Tuesday, we resumed full throttle training on Wednesday. It was good to notice the energy among the group. I don’t know the reason. Was it the sheer joy of playing cricket? Or, was it the rejuvenation that they had from the visit to a spa retreat in Kolkata on Tuesday? Whatever it was, it was working.
Australian speedster Shaun Tait has joined us in place of the injured John Hastings. We all know what he can do with a cricket ball in hand. For a fast bowler, he is affable and fun. I hope he makes his presence felt in the middle.
In the last two days, we have also had the pleasure of welcoming more members of the KKR family. Morne Morkel’s wife and son joined him on Monday. I am not sure about this, but one member of the support staff told me that the big man was out to buy nappies for his young boy.
I can’t imagine a mean fast bowler changing diapers. I also hear that Shakib Al Hasan was at the airport to receive his wife and daughter. Wasim bhai’s wife and little daughter have rejoined the legend in Kolkata. Yusuf Pathan’s sons continue to keep the big man on his toes. Our physio Andrew Leipus, his wife and two toddlers make a pretty picture. KKR’s ‘toddler team’ is completed by the presence of my little gem. The baby pool at our team hotel is quite a sight with all the moms and the little ones making a collective splash.
Can Lynn pen down a song for our ‘Toddler Team’? Let me check and comeback to you.
