6:46 AM IST UPDATE - 2 am GMT (7.30 am IST) - The rain is coming down quite heavily now, and puddles have already started to form on the outfield. However, the positive news is that The Gabba has a sand-based outfield, so drainage won't be an issue. Typically, rain breaks tend to halt the batting side’s momentum, forcing them to reset. In this case, the Indian seamers were just beginning to find their rhythm, troubling both Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney with a few close calls. As a result, Australia might actually welcome this break, while India may not be as pleased with the interruption. Stay tuned for more news.
6:42 AM IST Due to the time lost during the rain delay, the timings for the first session have been revised. Drinks will be taken at 2 am GMT (7.30 am IST) while Lunch will be taken at 2.50 am GMT (8.20 am IST).
6:41 AM IST UPDATE - 1.51 am GMT (7.21 am IST) - Uh oh! The rain has returned, and it's getting dark overhead. Mark Nicholas informs that showers were expected during this time of the day, and the forecast has unfortunately proven accurate. The players are off the field, and the ground staff have quickly covered the entire square as the rain is coming down quite heavily. We will have to wait and see how long this delay lasts. Stay tuned for further updates.
6:40 AM IST UPDATE - 1.04 am GMT (6.34 am IST) - Good signs! The sun is peeking out from the clouds and it has stopped raining. The covers are coming off. We are hearing that play will resume at 1.15 am GMT. Stick around as the restart is not far away.
6:39 AM IST UPDATE - 2.21 am GMT (7.51 am IST) - As the rain continues to fall at The Gabba, LUNCH has been taken. Several puddles have formed on the outfield, but as mentioned earlier, the drainage at this venue is excellent, so we could see a quick turnaround once the rain stops.
6:37 AM IST UPDATE - 3 am GMT (8.30 am IST) - In an ideal world, we would have the second session starting now, but the rain continues to fall heavily and persistently at The Gabba. The outfield has taken a real beating with puddles formed all around the outfield. Mark Nicholas reckons that any more play today seems unlikely and informs that the roads adjoining the stadium are flooded. Even with the excellent drainage system in place, it looks like we are in for a long delay before we can resume play, that is, if the rain stops soon.
