THU vs REN Commentary
12:45 PM IST We are done with 33 games out of the 40 in the league phase of the 2025/26 BBL. So far, the Hobart Hurricanes are the only team to have secured their place in the playoffs. The action continues on Tuesday, 13 January, when the Melbourne Stars take on the Adelaide Strikers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The game will get underway at 1.45 pm IST (8.15 am GMT), but as always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
12:42 PM IST A whirlwind phase of the game after the rain break. Sydney Thunder register their second win of the season, one that has dented the playoff hopes for the Melbourne Renegades. The Thunder bring smiles to the faces of their faithful supporters, who have stood by them through thick and thin, in their final home game of the season.
12:05 PM IST Earlier, there was no hesitation from the Sydney Thunder skipper Sam Billings, who chose to bowl first with the pitch having been under covers. It was a watchful start in the first couple of overs before Josh Brown came into his own. Wes Agar realised that hitting the 6-8 metres length was effective on this surface and showed the way for the others to follow. His double strike sparked the turnaround for the Thunder. Reduced to 90/4 after a 62-run opening stand, Hassan Khan and Mohammad Rizwan were able to get a partnership going. Rizwan struggled for the most part and was eventually retired out, but the desired finish did not materialise, and the 'Gades had to settle for 170 with just 31 runs coming off the final 4 overs.
12:03 PM IST Having played catch-up through the middle phase, the Thunder were 6 runs behind the DLS par score when rain brought about a delay. Upon resumption, the equation read 60 runs required off five overs in a shortened game. Sydney took their one over of the Power Surge straight away, and the start could not have been any worse, losing Sam Billings and Daniel Sams off the first two balls. On a wicket where hitting through the line was not easy, Nic Maddinson first shifted the momentum with a couple of sixes, before a hat-trick of sixes from Chris Green swung the contest firmly in the Thunder’s favour. From there on, there was no stopping them as the Thunder powered over the line.
12:02 PM IST With 171 to get, Sam Konstas found a few early boundaries but could not make his start count. It was a similar story for Cameron Bancroft, although his stay at the crease was more of a struggle. Post powerplay, the Renegades were able to apply the squeeze through the middle overs as the required run rate continued to climb, particularly around the 10th over with overs from Adam Zampa and Will Sutherland, just before the rain arrived.
11:56 AM IST Chris Green is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding, unbeaten cameo of 34 off just 13 balls. He is up for a quick chat. He details that he just reacted to the length Sandhu was bowling at him and feels lucky that it came off for him and admits that it was long overdue as well. On being asked about how he found the rhythm, Green explains that he was rewarded for striking the ball cleanly from the middle of the bat. Further admits that they were a bit stiff during the Power Surge, but are pleased with the way they bounced back in front of their home crowd towards the end. Green adds that the support from the fans has been special, despite a tough season, and humbly apologises, saying it was too little too late. He ends by saying that they look forward to the clash against the Sixers at the SCG. Also highlights that they knocked the Sixers out of the finals last season and that it would be nice to end their season with a win.
