HUR vs THU Commentary
12:00 PM IST Earlier, Sydney Thunder’s batting effort was a tug of war. They raced out of the blocks before the Hurricanes pulled things back outside the Powerplay, reducing the Thunder to 79/4 at the halfway mark. Cameron Bancroft and Shadab Khan then combined in a crucial rescue act, with Bancroft going on to score 61. Thanks to valuable contributions from Shadab and Daniel Sams, Sydney got up to 180. It did not prove enough on the night, with the dew making batting easier during Hobart’s reply and blunting the effectiveness of their bowling attack.
11:58 AM IST In pursuit of 181, Mitchell Owen opened the innings for Hobart alongside a new partner in Nikhil Chaudhary. Owen blazed off to a quick start, while Chaudhary, who had an early reprieve on 1 when a catch went down, endured a more hit-or-miss beginning. Owen’s start put the Hurricanes well ahead of the curve. The partnership between Chaudhary and Ben McDermott looked to be running away with the game, but once that stand was broken, Sydney were able to chip away at the wickets. However, the quick cameos that followed ensured the required run rate was never much of an issue. It became a matter of batting sensibly to take the team over the line. In the end, it came down to Jordan and Ellis, who held their nerve to see Hobart home.
11:56 AM IST Up next in the 2025/26 Big Bash League, we head to the Sydney Cricket Ground, where the Sydney Sixers host the Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday, 17 December. The Sixers come into this contest on the back of an opening night defeat, while the Strikers will be taking the field for the first time this season. The first ball is scheduled for 1.45 pm IST (8.15 am GMT), but as always, you can join us earlier for all the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
11:56 AM IST Chris Jordan is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his all-round contributions. 2/36 with the ball and then an unbeaten 16 off 13 to take his team home. He says the players have just joined for the tournament, so they'll be happy to grab the two points and start on a good note. Tells he assessed the wicket in the second over and with a little bit of help, he got two big wickets in the over. Hopes the crowd helps them to go all the way as they did last year.
11:55 AM IST Time for the presentation ceremony....
11:49 AM IST It got a little too close for comfort towards the end, but the Hobart Hurricanes begin their title defence with a win. The reigning champions may not have been at their best in the run chase, with no batter taking the responsibility to see the team over the line, but they still found a way to get the job done. As for the Sydney Thunder, they will take heart from the fight they put up and the fact that, in dewy conditions, they managed to stretch the game right down to the final over.
