India vs South Africa Commentary
4:22 PM IST At around 6.30 pm IST, Robin Uthappa, speaking on air, had suggested that delaying the start would be counterintuitive, with the fog only set to thicken as the evening rolls on. Those words proved prophetic and, inevitably, the fourth T20I got abandoned, without a toss and after six inspections from the umpires. From here on, India cannot lose the series, meaning their purple patch in bilateral contests since the 2024 T20 World Cup continues.
4:18 PM IST The action now shifts to Ahmedabad, where one hopes the air will stay clear and the focus firmly on cricket. It is the finale of South Africa's tour, with a chance still alive for them to level the series and head home smiling. India, though, will have their sights set on a 3-1 finish, to go with the 2-1 ODI series win, even if it may not fully erase the disappointment of losing a home Test series. The fifth T20I will be played on Friday, 19 December 2025, starting at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). Do join us early for the build-up. Thanks for your company, goodbye and cheers!
4:15 PM IST What an uneventful evening it turned out to be. There was plenty of hope, followed by heartbreak for those who made the trip to the ground. They waited patiently and cheered every umpire inspection, only to head home with a 'foggy memory' of the night. Unfortunate, as it gets.
4:15 PM IST Fog, air pollution and cricket, an uncomfortable trio coming together. When visibility drops and the air turns heavy, the game is no longer just about bat and ball but about safety, stamina and perhaps, common sense. Tonight, patience runs out as reality steps in, and the only sensible call is made. The wait is over, and the MATCH HAS BEEN CALLED OFF.
4:02 PM IST UPDATE - 9.26 pm IST (3.56 pm GMT) - Out come the two umpires for the inspection. Hopeful eyes await, and whenever Rohan Pandit and KN Ananthapadmanabhan have made their way out, they are greeted by a loud cheer from the crowd who have gone nowhere. The two umpires stand at either end of the 22 yards and look into the distance to check the visibility. A few of the Indian players have been spotted on the balcony. Another inspection in the offing?
3:39 PM IST UPDATE - 8.59 pm IST (3.29 pm GMT) - Inspection time, the 5th of the night, if you are wondering. What has been the practice so far is for the two umpires to walk around the outfield to assess the visibility and whether they can see into the distance before moving towards the strip. This time, they have gone straight onto the pitch, which is still covered with the hessian cloth. They are now seen relaying their observations to representatives of the Indian camp. And the wait continues, we will have one more inspection at 9.25 pm IST. Mayanti Langer shares on air that 9.46 pm IST is the cut-off time for a five-over contest, but we are yet to receive official confirmation.
