India vs West Indies Commentary

9:20 AM IST Shubman Gill's side has started the home season just the way they would have liked, while Roston Chase and Co. will need to take the learnings from this game and come back stronger. A third win in six matches for India in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, while the West Indies have now lost all four of their outings. The action now shifts north to Delhi, where the second and final Test of the series will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium from Friday, 10th October. The first ball is scheduled for 9.30 am IST (4 am GMT). As always, we will be with you early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Kuldeep Yadav to Jayden Seales, no run

82.3kph

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! DONE AND DUSTED! India win the first Test match by an innings and 140 runs to take a lead of 1-0 in the two-match series. Kuldeep dishes a full ball, lands it in the rough, around off. Jayden Seales remains leg side of the ball and tries to take on the bowler as he was doing in the last couple of overs. He tries to smoke it downtown, but the ball is a bit full and ends up playing it back off the toe end of the bat. Kuldeep gets a bit surprised and brings both his hands in front to take it, but fails to grab, and the ball pops out after hitting his chest. He shows his composure and manages to pouch it on the second attempt. This is a big win for India to kick-start their home season, and they have been clinical in every department, showing their dominance.

8:48 AM IST Indian skipper Shubman Gill is up for a word. He begins with a smile about his unusual streak of tosses and says that it is now six losses in a row, but as long as the team keeps winning matches, it doesn’t matter much to him. What matters more, he stresses, is the way the side has been performing together, and he calls this game a near-perfect one for India. Speaking on the batting effort, Gill points out that three different players - KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Dhruv Jurel - stepped up with centuries, which set the tone for India. Admits that both he and Jaiswal had starts but couldn’t convert, yet he is happy that others made it count. For him, this was a good wicket to bat on and the team maximised it well. On the challenge of managing three spinners, the Indian captain notes that when you have quality options like Jadeja, Kuldeep, and Washington Sundar, it is never easy to rotate them, but that is also the fun and beauty of playing cricket in India. Notes that there is always someone ready to make a difference, and that depth, he says, is a big plus for the side. Gill adds that over the last couple of years, this group has shown strong character, learning to fight through tough situations together. Mentions the England series as an example of how the team has grown, and believes that as long as India keeps learning and improving, he will be satisfied with the direction they are heading.
8:42 AM IST The captain of the West Indies, Roston Chase, says that it was always going to be tough after being bowled out for 162 in the first innings and then with the way India piled on the runs. Adds that it was not the performance they were looking for and believes that they need to bat better. Opines that in these conditions, where the pitch usually deteriorates going into Days 4 and 5, you need to post a big first innings total. Shares that he does not regret batting first, as there was always going to be some help for the pacers early on due to the moisture, but as batters, they need to see off that phase. Reckons that they did not make the batters play enough with the second new ball. Overall, he believes that batting is the main problem, and they must string partnerships.
8:41 AM IST Ravindra Jadeja is the PLAYER FOR THE MATCH for his brilliant all-round showing. Shares that during the break after the England series, he had been working on his fitness and skills at the Centre of Excellence. Mentions that batting at number 6 allows him to take his time and pace his innings. Says that he enjoys bowling on red-soil tracks as there is always some turn and bounce for him to work with. Tells that he is honoured to be appointed vice-captain for this series and he thanks the captain, the coach and the selectors for giving him this responsibility.
