The 30-year-old Rohit Sharma last played a Test for India against New Zealand in October 2016. Following the end of the series, he was sidelined due to a thigh injury and missed the home Test series against England and Australia. The Mumbai batsman returned to action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and helped Mumbai Indians to their third title.

Rohit Sharma played brilliantly for India in the ICC Champions Trophy, where he ended as the second highest run-getter for his side with 304 runs in five matches, including a century in the semi-final against Bangladesh. Rohit was then rested for the limited-overs series against West Indies.
