Why Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad will make cricket history
The Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad will have a capacity of 110,000 when completely renovated. It will better Melbourne Cricket Grounds’s capacity of 100,024
Melbourne’s Cricket Ground (MCG), which is currently the world’s biggest stadium in terms of seating capacity, will lose its record in about a year’s time. The Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, will take that record after the new renovated venue opens up in two years time.
Motera’s seating capacity will go up from presently 54,000 to to seat about 1,10,000 that will put MCG’s 100,024 in the shade.
The Sardar Patel cricket stadium in Motera has hosted 12 Test matches and 24 one-day internationals since it was inaugurated in 1982.
Gujarat Cricket Association’s vice-president and Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani handed over the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) director M.V. Sathish in a small ceremony in Ahmedabad on Thursday. L&T will undertake the expansion project.
“The ground is ready to be handed over to the construction company. The new stadium, when completed, will be the largest cricket stadium in the world which will be made to meet all the latest the international standards,” read a press release from the GCA.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was president of GCA once. That position is now handled by the Prime Minister’s trusted general and BJP president, Amit Shah.
GCA officials added that the renovation and removal of the old structure will begin soon.
