Eleven schoolchildren sustained injuries in two separate road accidents in New Delhi on early Tuesday, police said.
In the first incident, the driver of a speeding taxi lost control and hit six schoolgirls at Kondli bridge, close to the Kalyanpuri police station in east Delhi. The driver, Satish, was arrested.
According to the police, the injured girls identified as Pooja Kumari, Pooja Sharma, Sushma, Jyoti, Usha and Rubi are all Class nine students of Rashtriya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya. They were crossing the bridge on their way to school when the incident occurred.
Police said they were admitted to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital.
"The doctors have discharged four girls after first-aid. The other two have suffered fractures but are recuperating," assistant commissioner of police DR Birdi informed.
"We have sent the accused for medical examination to ascertain whether he was drunk," he added.
In the second incident, a call centre cab injured five students in northwest Delhi.
According to the police, a SUV of the telecom major Airtel, travelling at over 100 km per hour, crashed into a Maruti van in Rohini Sector 24. All the five students inside the van were of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Rohini.
"Of the five students, four have been discharged from the hospital after initial treatment. One has been shifted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital," a police official said.
The official said that the driver of the cab, Dipu, has been arrested.
The incidents occurred barely a week after 24 students were injured when a minibus carrying them to school turned turtle in east Delhi. The father of one of the students who was travelling in the minibus was killed in the incident.
In a separate incident, two people were killed after a truck hit their motorbike in Kalyanpuri, east Delhi, late Monday.
According to the police, it was a head-on collision and the two people who were yet to be identified died on the spot. The police were looking for the truck driver.
