An 11-year-old girl from Jharkhand, who was working as a domestic help at a rented flat of an MBBS student in south Delhi's Nizamuddin area, was rescued by a team of the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, the minor girl was allegedly being physically tortured by the medical student.
The police have registered a case under sections 23, 24 and 25 of Juvenile Justice Act and 323 of IPC against the medical student, identified as Auliya. She is absconding ever since the matter was brought to the notice of the police by her neighbours.
Auliya is pursuing her MBBS degree from a private college in Ghaziabad.
A senior police officer said they received a call at the police control room that a minor girl was being beaten up by her employer.
"A police team reached the spot and rescued the girl. She was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where she underwent treatment for abrasions on her arms and legs. We later produced the victim before the child welfare committee that sent her to a shelter home," said the officer, adding that they were looking for Auliya.
Auliya's neighbour, Mohammad Umar, said the victim had been working at Auliya's flat for the last 18 months.
"Auliya used to beat her up frequently, even though we had requested her several times not to torture the girl. On Wednesday too, the victim was beaten up badly by Auliya, after which we decided to inform the police and get the girl rescued," said Umar.
He added that Auliya had been living alone in the rented flat and had hired the minor as a full-time maid.
