Twelve members, including a woman, of two families were injured late Tuesday night after a row over a cricket game. The incident took place near Aulia mosque in south Delhi’s Mehrauli area. Four people have been arrested.
The row occurred when the cricket ball some teenagers were playing with, kept flying into Prabhudayal’s shop. Police said the children’s constant disturbance reportedly infuriated Prabhudayal’s son Dinesh who had a heated argument with one of the boys, Abid Ali.
“Some neighbours intervened and the matter was settled for a while. About an hour later, the two families picked up another argument,” said a police officer. Dinesh allegedly beat up Abid and the situation worsened, said the officer.
“Both families brought wooden staffs from their houses and attacked each other,” added the officer. Police said they also started pelting stones at each other’s houses and hurled abuses.
Police received a call around 8.30 pm that a riot-like situation had developed between two religious communities. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
“We have arrested the accused and registered a case,” said Anil Shukla, deputy commissioner of police (south).
The injured were rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where they were discharged after minor treatments.
