Nearly 150 girls were left in the lurch on Tuesday as the paying guest (PG) accommodation they were staying in was sealed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The civic agency’s building department of Central Zone sealed 16 flats in five to six properties of South Extension-1. Nearly 150 girls used to stay in five of these flats.
Only the girls who were present at the time of sealing could salvage their belongings. About 10 to 15 girls, who had gone out, came back to find the gates sealed, said MCD officials.
“In the evening, we unlocked one of the PGs that housed nearly 60 girls and allowed them to collect their belongings. Four flats are still locked,” said an MCD senior official.
He added that some girls complained to the local police station, saying they had been duped by the PG owners by not revealing the fact that the properties were unauthorised and were going to be sealed.
“Some girls had moved in just eight days ago. Many of them have paid two months’ charges in advance. The girls kept trying to contact the PG owners but most of them have run away,” the official said.
The MCD will continue with its sealing drive on Thursday. On Monday, the building department had sealed 23 flats comprising six properties in South Extension part-1.
Many of these flats had added floors and extensions without proper permission from the competent authority.
