Two young students died and three others, including two women, were critically injured when their car was hit by an unidentified vehicle on the Ghazipur flyover in east Delhi early on Thursday morning.
Police said all five were drunk and reportedly driving at a very high speed.
The two deceased were identified as Nikhil and Divyakant, both 20 years old and residents of Ghaziabad. The three injured were identified as Satnama, Sidhartha and Sakshi. They were taken to to GTB Hospital in Shahadra.
Police said the five were returning from a party in a Maruti SX4 when the accident took place. Liquor bottles were recovered from the car.
“A medical examination revealed that all five were drunk,” said IB Rani, DCP (east). The victims were reportedly preparing for a competitive exam and went to the same institute.
“The parents of the three injured took them to different private hospitals from GTB hospital,” said a police officer. Police said none of them was in a condition to give a statement as to how the accident took place.
“As none of the survivors are in a conscious state we don’t know what happened. It seems they were hit by a heavy vehicle from behind,” said the officer. After being hit, the car toppled over and crashed into the road divider.
Police said they were trying to ascertain the sequence of events and were looking for eyewitnesses.
