Two persons were killed and seven injured when they jumped from the fourth floor of a building to escape from a fire that broke out at its second floor in Beadonpura, Karol Bagh.
The incident was reported at 11.45pm on Thursday. The second floor of the building, where the fire broke out, houses over two dozen small shops.
“Around 12 labourers who work at a jewellery showroom were sleeping on the second floor. When the fire broke out, they got panicked and rushed to the top floor of the four-storeyed building. From there they tried to jump to the adjacent building,” a senior police officer requesting anonymity said.
While few of them managed to jump to the adjacent building, two of them fell down. They were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. “Robin (25) and Debu (26) died due to head injuries. Even those who survived have suffered fractures and other injuries. None of them have burn injuries,” the officer added. Few of the injured are also admitted to Lady Hardinge Hospital.
“We saw smoke coming out from a room on the second floor. I woke up others and we started running towards the top floor to save ourselves. We are working here with a jewellery making company,” one of the injured said.
According to eyewitnesses, it took fire department staff over four hours to douse the blaze.
“We came out of our house after we heard labourers screaming for help. They all were on the top floor. We called the police and also informed the fire department,” Ranjeet a resident of Beedanpura said.
According to fire department officials, the fire was brought under control at 3.55am.
The cause of fire is not known yet but according to initial investigations, short circuit could be one of the reasons.
