The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against 62 people, including 10 senior Northern Railway officers, for cheating the government to the tune of Rs 1.15 crore. The accused public servants in connivance with families of 52 railway employees made forged papers to illegally avail pension of employees who were not eligible for it. The agency accused the officials of ‘entering into a criminal conspiracy violating the provisions of pension schemes like, ex-gratia pension, family pension and invalid pension — 3 schemes floated by the government in 1988’.
“The accused contacted 52 alleged beneficiaries who were never eligible for any pension and got signature and thumb impression on printed formatted document,” the chargesheet read.
Most of the accused are from the finance and accounts department of Northern Railways. The agency found the officers allegedly ensured the forged papers do not go to the concerned controlling officers. They also destroyed resettlement files after the amount was transferred into the accounts. The CBI had also arrested one of the main accused, Subhash Rohila, but he was later released on bail.
