Depressed over his failure to find a groom for his daughter, a 70-year-old man set his house on fire before committing suicide in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar on Thursday.
Brijmohan Sabharwal was found hanging from a window grille in his room by his 38-year-old daughter Yogita, who woke up at 5am to see the house filled with smoke and the lobby furniture in flames.
It took four fire tenders 30 minutes to douse the flames — which had engulfed a few furniture items, curtains and bedding — in the three-storey building.
The night before, Sabharwal had told Yogita he was upset that he was unable to find a match for her and had asked her to leave him alone, the police said. “She told us Sabarwal had been looking for a groom for her for 10 years but she was rejected as he could not afford a dowry and a lavish wedding,” a senior police officer said.
Sabharwal had stopped working as a commission agent at Sabzi Mandi after the death of his wife three years ago and ran the household on her family pension.
“He was a heart patient. Though Yogita told him not to be stressed, he remained depressed,” the officer said. Police have recorded Yogita’s statement and initiated an inquiry.
A fire department official said, “We received a call around 5.10am... While no casualties were reported due to the fire, one man was found hanging inside the house.”
