The cabinet on Thursday is expected to consider eight per cent hike in dearness allowance of the Union government keeping in view high inflation in the past six months.
The hike would be applicable from January 1, 2010. About 50 lakh employees and 38 lakh pensioners would get increase in their basic salary. The inflation had been over 10 per cent for the past many months.
The cabinet is also expected to consider amendment to the Anti-Hijacking Act, 1982, invoking death penalty for hijacking. A Group of Ministers had recommended that hijacking an airplane should amount to it being used as a missile for killing many people. The proposed change in the law is said to be one of the ramifications of 9/11, where hijacked planes were dashed into building killing hundreds of people in US.
The cabinet will also consider four education reforms Bills of the human resource development ministry. First Bill aims to ban unfair practices in technical and medical educational institutions and universities. The second aims to set up tribunals to settle all educational disputes and malpractices. The third Bill will ensure mandatory accreditation of the institutes, while the fourth one aims to take away academic functions of the Council of Architecture and limiting it to controlling the profession would be taken up.
