Misbehaving with or physically abusing a traffic policeman on duty can lead to a criminal case against you as the Delhi Traffic Police has started “acting tough” in view of increase in such instances.
On Thursday, when a criminal case was registered against the husband of a municipal councillor for hitting a traffic cop in south Delhi, another case was registered against a couple in Connaught Place police station for pushing a traffic cop and tearing his uniform.
In another incident, a case of theft was registered in Vikas Puri police station against a person who forcibly took away his car, which was impounded by the traffic police.
“People should and must respect a public authority. Nobody should obstruct government servants. We have started acting tough and initiated proceedings against such offenders under the IPC,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SN Shrivastava said.
“When a public servant commits any crime, he gets severe punishment. Like the traffic cop who raped a minor has been dismissed from service. On the same lines, people should also be liable for strict punishment,” Shrivastava added.
On Thursday, a woman was driving her car against the flow of traffic in middle circle of CP when motorcycle-borne Head Constable Ram Kumar stopped her. She called her husband, accused Palwinder Singh, a businessman from West Patel Nagar. He actually pushed Ram Kumar and also tore off the cop's uniform, police said.
“Our staff has been instructed not to argue and call the local police instead. Ram Kumar called the PCR and the accused was handed over to the police,” DCP (Traffic) New Delhi Range Suvashish Chauadhary said. A case was registered against Palwinder Singh.
In Vikas Puri incident, traffic police had impounded a car. The accused walked into the premises where the car was kept along with other impounded vehicles with a group of people and after arguing with a lone traffic cop, took away the car. A case of theft has been registered against him, police said.
