For Ramesh Dutta, being an MCD councillor is his life considering that he has been one for the last 35 years and will be on the job for five more years.
The Congress candidate is the oldest winning candidate this time — the eighth time that he has won the seat from the Minto Road ward.
“I can retire from politics and rest, but I would rather die campaigning than die in my bed,” said Ramesh Dutta.
Dutta, whose total assets are worth Rs 44,000, says all he wants to do is work for his electors.
“I have dedicated my life to the improvement of this area and will continue to do so,” he said.
What worked in Dutta’s favour is his accessibility.
In an area dotted with slums, Dutta is popular for being on call.
Attending social functions, being easily available for public meetings and lending an ear to the electorate ensured Dutta’s return for another term. “I will work till I have the strength to do so,” said Dutta.
