Vikas Dagar, the main accused in the attack on MLA Bharat Singh, waited for the municipal elections to get over before making plans to eliminate him, police claimed.
A resident of Jharoda Kalan village, Dagar was sure Singh would not target him before the elections as the MLA's relative was contesting the civic elections and was eyeing the village vote bank.
“As soon as the elections got over, Dagar started fearing for his life and decided to kill Singh before he could retaliate,” a senior police officer said requesting anonymity.
Sources said the four accused — Vikas Dagar, Kuldeep Mittal, Sumeet Singh and Virender Sehrawat — met at a Gurgaon mall after the incident. Sources said they spend the whole day at the mall and left for Kishangarh around 4:30 pm.
“They had planned to escape to Rajasthan but had to collect money from a contact at Kishangarh, Vasant Kunj. As they arrived at Kishangarh, they were arrested,” the officer added. A senior police officer said that none of the arrested persons had a criminal record and this was the first time they used a gun.
“May be, this was the reason they could not kill Singh. We recovered 10 empty cartridges, three live rounds, a revolving chamber, cylinder and other parts of a revolver from the scene of crime,” the officer further said.
Police said Dagar is a graduate from Ram Lal Anand College of Delhi University and has done his MBA from Sikkim Manipal University.
He had intended to go to Dublin for further studies.
Mittal is a school dropout and unemployed. Sumeet Singh is an agriculturist and also runs a transport business. Virender Sehrawat is employed with DTC.
Police said on Saturday morning when they attacked Singh, he managed to hide himself in the bathroom.
The assailants broke open the bathroom door and then shot at him. Bharat Singh's relative Dharampal tried to catch hold of one of assailants. He was also shot at and injured.
