The three accused men, all around-25-years old, had stabbed to death and then stole a 27-year-old cop's wallet --with a little over Rs. 200 in it.

The new challenge for law enforcement was the increasing number of young habitual offenders, for whom, all levels of the justice system must expeditiously adapt, a Delhi court observed. "Undue sympathy" for them "will do more harm" than good, the judge said as she handed out life sentences to three men, all around-25-years old. They had stabbed to death and then stole a 27-year-old cop's wallet --with a little over Rs. 200 in it.

While ordering that Delhi residents Rudermani @ Rohit Maderia, Rohit Mehto, Sunil Lal be imprisoned for life for threatening at knife-point, murdering and and then robbing Constable Harkesh Meena of PS Narela,aAdditional sessions judge Kamini Lau noted that the 27-year-old officer had been murdered as the convicts wanted "easy money."

Young offenders were “graduating in crime with every passing incident...Courts are required to mould the sentencing system to meet these challenges,” she added.

During trial, Rudermani tried to pass himself off as a juvenile to get a more lenient sentence. However, court ordered a medical examination which revealed he was 19-years-old.

The judge observed that young men were trying to take “advantage of the Benevolent Law” by pleading "juvenility." This only proved these convicts were “legally informed” and "aware of the consequences" of their "heinous actions", she added.

According to the prosecution, around 10PM in the winter of 2011, Meena was returning to his barrack after completing his shift, and was passing through Adarsh Nagar Metro Station. He was not in uniform at the time.

An eyewitness deposed that three young men attacked Meena. One held him by the waist and another by the neck and the third stabbed him with a knife, the witness said. Once the injured young cop collapsed, the trio pilfered his wallet.

Meena was taken to BJRM hospital but he succumbed to injuries. He was declared DOA an hour after the brutal attack. In their rush to escape, the robbers had left behind Meen's Noika Mobile phone, and a black gym bag containing his uniform and Rs 13 cash.

Delhi Police tracked down Rudermani, who led them to Sunil’s house where they recovered a wallet containing a photocopy of Meena’s I-card and passport-size photos. Rudermani also handed Rs. 208 to the cops which the the trio had stolen.
