"Anjum was with her sister-in-law when the landlady came and started shouting. After beating her, they left, after which her sister-in-law called Anjum's husband. She was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) hospital," said Ziya-ul-Haq, a relative.

Anjum's husband - Abdul Quddus - had reportedly given Rs 2 lakh to the landlord on May 13 as two-year advance payment, after which the owners started asking them to vacate the house. The matter is pending in court.

"The house is owned by Rajendra Prasad Goyal and his wife Pushpa Devi is troubling us. She sent her husband to a rehabilitation centre and filed a kidnapping case against us claiming we had kidnapped Goyal," said Haq.

"After that, she disconnected the electricity supply. We then moved court. Last week, the court ordered that they cannot force us to vacate the house," Haq added.

Meanwhile, doctors at LBS hospital confirmed that Anjum had suffered a miscarriage. "There are no external injuries. Her condition is stable," Dr Veer Singh, medical superintendent of the hospital said. It was the first child of the couple.

"We have registered a case under section 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt) and 316 (causing death of unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide) of IPC, said Prabhakar, DCP (east).
