Over three months after he joined as Air India’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Gustav Baldauf is still to get security clearance from the government. Baldauf joined the national carrier as its first ever COO on June 2 on a hefty annual pay package of around R3.1 crore. The file seeking the security clearance was, however, only recently sent to the cabinet secretariat by the civil aviation ministry. AI, on its part says, that Baldauf has been meeting DGCA and ministry officials, attending board meetings and carrying out his functions of COO and has a visa valid for employment in India. Baldauf has also started drawing salary and is subject to the country’s tax laws. Ministry officials, however, agree that an adverse security report would make the appointment invalid.
Another retired babu as state CIC
After Tamil Nadu, it is turn of Orissa to appoint its chief secretary Tarun Mishra as the state’s Chief Information Commissioner. This comes in the wake of RTI activists around the country protesting the appointment of retired bureaucrats in the information commissions which aims at improving transparency in the government functioning. Except, Shailesh Gandhi, all other information commissioners in the Central Information Commission are retired bureaucrats.
Nath makes transport officials work harder
Officials are generally a busy lot these days, but 'babus' of the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways are truly burning the midnight oil. Reason: Transport Minister Kamal Nath is determined to ensure that everything is in order in respect of his ministry’s report card. Being the pro-active Minister that he is, Nath has held a series of meetings with officials over the last fortnight to discuss the specifics of the ministry report card. All ministries are scheduled to submit their quarterly performance reports to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh next month.
