If you want to check if your name is on the voters’ list or seek know details about your polling station, all you have to do is to send an SMS.
The chief electoral officer (CEO) of Delhi will launch an SMS service on July 1. The voter will have to send his/her 10-digit voter ID card number to the soon-to-be-launched helpline number to know the details.
“Every electors’ voter identification card should be a 10-digit number. But 2.5 lakh voters in Delhi had either four or five digits in their voter ID number. We have managed to remove this discrepancy. Now, every voter will be able to message their voter identification number to a mobile number provided by us. Through this service, voters will be able to check their name in the voters’ list, polling booth address and other such details,” said a senior official.
An extensive drive to correct the electoral rolls was undertaken by the office of the CEO. It was found that of the alleged 15 lakh bogus, dead voters or those who have shifted their residence, nearly 12 lakh were genuine cases.
“We have identified a number of voters who have turned out to be bogus, dead or those who have shifted their residence. This was a major exercise. Those who have moved to another locality will be registered at their latest address,” added the official.
The CEO office will provide assembly-wise details of the bogus/dead voters.
On July 1, the draft electoral roll will be announced and those who would be left out, will have time till September to get registered.
“We found that six per cent of the voters had voter identification cards without their photographs. This was one of the major reasons for bogus voting. Such cases have been brought down from 7.8 lakh cases to 2.8. By September, every voter in Delhi will have a photo identification card,” said the official.
Assembly polls in Delhi are due in November this year.
