The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Rajesh and Nupur Talwar's plea challenging the CBI's decision to drop 14 prosecution witnesses in the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case.

A bench of justices BS Chauhan and Dipak Misra told Talwar counsel Tanweer Ahmed Mir that the CBI could not be compelled to summon its witnesses if it wanted to drop them.

"We can't conduct a mini trial. How can you compel the CBI to call the witnesses? Law permits you to examine them," the bench said, asking if the Talwars had moved an application to call them as defence witnesses.

"Why are you in a hurry? Recording of your statement is going on. You examine them after that."
