During his nine days’ stay at the Ramlila Maidan, Anna Hazare has received as many as 7,000 letters and postcards from various parts of the country.
A team of volunteers were assigned the job to collect the letters and pass it on to Anna. However, all the letters were first screened by the volunteers before they were passed to him to ensure they are not negative in nature.
“We have been receiving about 400 letters and same number of postcards every day. While a number of people have been supporting the movement, there are others who are against the movement too,” said Akshay, a volunteer. “But we make sure not to pass on such letters to Annaji. Only the letters in which the writer supports the movement are given to him,” said Akshay, a volunteer.
There are some letters that appeal Anna to take care of his failing health and break his fast. In many letters that the volunteers have received,
people have written about their personal experiences of corruption and about their hopes that this movement will help check that.
“We don’t know how these letters are reaching us. The letters have been posted in Anna’s name and the address was Ramlila Maidan,” he added.
“Generally to deliver a letter, one needs a complete address. However, these letters just bear Ramlila Maidan. The movement has become so famous that even the postmaster knows that these letters are meant for Annaii,” said another volunteer.
